Remembering Copperhill

Thomas King recently put together a wonderful slideshow of images from Copperhill, Tennessee - the place where my novel, A BIRD ON WATER STREET takes place.
As you look through, notice the lack of trees, the moonlike backgrounds in the older photographs. Copperhill's landscape was completely denuded from a century of poor copper mining practices. They called it The Red Hills (as you'll see).
My story centers around Jack, a thirteen-year-old boy living in the moon-like locale during the closing of the mines. It's a powerful history and, I hope you'll read and agree it's a powerful story too.
