E.B. Lewis at Hollins!

We have an incredible line-up of speakers here at Hollins this summer. It included Caldecott-winner E.B. Lewis.
One of our lucky students, Donald got to go to dinner with him and introduce his talk. I was also invited along and got to enjoy E.B. giving Donald some wonderful, life-changing advice over an eclectic mix of foods Donald had never tried before. It's so fun to see a student light up when an experience truly resonates with them - as this experience did with Donald! He gave a great intro too!
E.B. is a fabulous speaker, really more of a storyteller. And he is an enormous talent. We all learned tons from him during his talk and his workshop the next day, including our students...
and faculty (here are Ashley, John on a stool, and Ruth).
Personally, I am mostly a self-taught watercolorist because my college course was taught by a modernist who was all about "feeling" the paint rather than actually working with it in any practical way. So, I learned tons too - from how much pigment to mix with the water, what brushes to use - when and why, how saturated to lay down color, how wet to keep the paper, how to mix colors and create gradients. You name it - it was fascinating and so, so helpful to all of us!
With luck, we'll have E.B. back soon - he was a hit here at Hollins!!! THANK YOU, E.B.!!!
