Old City of Shanghai at Huangpu District

It turned out that Shushu Li, a friend from my PhD days at the University of Glasgow, teaches at the Normal University and is based in Shanghai. So she took a day to show me around. We headed straight for Yu Garden. But before we went into the garden itself, there was the city of Old Shanghai that surrounded it! This is what we westerners typically think of when we envision China.
I loved this classic photo op with Shushu and me.
Here's Wikipedia's description:
Yu Garden or Yuyuan Garden (traditional Chinese: 豫園; simplified Chinese: 豫园; pinyin: Yù Yuán, Shanghainese Yuyoe Wu Chinese pronunciation: [ɦy.ɦɥø], lit. Garden of Happiness) is an extensive Chinese garden located beside the City God Temple in the northeast of the Old City of Shanghai at Huangpu District, Shanghai. It abuts the Yuyuan Tourist Mart, the Huxinting Teahouse and the Yu Garden Bazaar...Yu Garden was first built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan as a comfort for his father, the minister Pan En, in his old age.
I wasn't able to go into the temple, but I certainly saw plenty!
Old Shanghai is a tourist destination for locals too.

Vendors sell shwag galore.
I purchased some more souvenirs, but mostly just enjoyed looking around.
Shushu insisted I try a favorite treat there - candy covered fruit. They were much like our candied apples, but were strawberries and lychee fruit instead.

We had no idea what this was all about...
But wait - there was more!!!

Did you have the lychee? I love lychee! The architecture is gorgeous and everything looks so neat and tidy.
