Friday evening we helped celebrate the release of Vicky Alvear Shecter's new novel CURSES AND SMOKE: A NOVEL OF POMPEII. She had a volcano cake (smoke came out of it) and lava cupcakes.
Her daughter, Aliya, wore a rose crown just like the girl on the cover.
Ashley Parsons drove all the way from Alabama to help Vicky celebrate - here's a selfie of the three of us:
And the crowd was awesome.
Vicky is a docent at the Carlos Museum at Emory here in Atlanta, so she is an excellent storyteller by trade as well as an expert on Greek/Roman/Egyptian mythology. She wove all her knowledge into POMPEII to take the reader back to experience the culture, the superstition and the tragedy first-hand. I've always been amazed by her ability to do that. CURSES AND SMOKE is a proud follow-up to her first YA, CLEOPATRA'S MOON, and a must read!
